Kristin Korb treasures the jazz tradition. Her collaborations with Ray Brown, Bruce Forman, Jeff Hamilton and more, have showcased her incredible sense of swing. On Kristin’s 2013 release What’s Your Story?, she dug deep into her long-standing relationship with classic jazz material and those musical personalities who influenced her.

Love took the American bassist and singer to Denmark in 2011. After getting married in July 2011 to a Dane, Morten Stove, Co-Founder of DPA Microphones, she moved to Copenhagen, Denmark.

Kristin has been a CalJAS favorite for many years and has performed for us many, many times, includeing a half dozen House Concerts, the Hollywood Magic Castle, the Pasadena Jazz Institute, Hip Kitty and Galli’s jazz clubs, Boatman/Summers Presents, and more. “Bruce Forman is one of the great lights of our age.” – Barney Kessel

A busy touring schedule; seventeen recordings as a leader; countless sideman
recording dates–including a featured role on one of jazz great Ray Brown’s last albums;
soundtrack performances on three of Clint Eastwood’s distinguished films–the Oscar-winning
Million Dollar Baby, Oscar-nominated Flags of Our Fathers and Hereafter ; producer, arranger,
and acclaimed educator; over twenty appearances at the landmark Monterey Jazz Festival;
in residence at USC ’s Studio / Jazz Guitar Dept.—when does Bruce Forman rest? Forman is a
seasoned jazz player with top-level skills as a leader, entertainer and sideman.
He creates soulful, lyrical melodies, inventive harmonies, and solid accompaniment.
Though he can shred bebop at blistering tempos with the best of ‘em, he is no urban snob.
Cow Bop, Forman’s unique “western bebop” band, hit four separate charts with its CDs,
Swingin’ Out West, Route 66, Too Hick for the Room and Cowlifornia Swing. In May 2014,
Cow Bop was inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame.

Forman is also a distinguished music educator and in-kind philanthropist. His national music-mentoring
program, JazzMasters Workshop, provided over 2,500 sessions for young students.
Always free of charge, JazzMasters’ sessions occurred during after-school hours, and the program
enriched lives and helped develop numerous musicians who have gone on to promising careers.

One of the most generous musicians anywhere, Bruce has performed numerous times for CalJAS audiences.

CalJAS PRESENTS JUNE 17: LUTHER HUGHES AND FRIENDS-TRIBUTE TO NAT KING COLE

Image result for LUTHER HUGHES REMEMBERING NAT KING COLE

In 2007, Luther assembled a group of friends to perform music from the Nat King Cole Trio. Modeled after the drummerless line-up of the ’40s & ’50s King Cole Trio, the group consists of John Proulx on vocals and piano, Barry Zweig on guitar, and Luther Hughes on bass. Luther’s trio performs regularly in the Southern California area, offering a great blend of narrative information and the music of the early King Cole trio.

JOHN PROULX

The jazz scene has been abuzz about singer/pianist/composer John Proulx (pronounced “Prue”) for over decade now. His piano playing is hot and swinging, and his voice recalls the smooth, mellow sounds of a young Chet Baker. John’s debut CD, “Moon and Sand”,on the Maxjazz label, was released on August 1st, 2006,  and featured legendary musicians Chuck Berghofer and Joe LaBarbera, and was produced by Tamir Hendelman.  The CD garnered national and international acclaim. In addition to his own trio, John has performed with the likes of Anita O’Day, Natalie Cole, and Marian McPartland.

John is also a Grammy-winning composer.  Jazz legend, Nancy Wilson, recorded “These Golden Years”, a song that John co-wrote with lyricist D. Channsin Berry, for her 2006 Grammy-winning CD, Turned to Blue.  Jazz singer, Mary Stallings, also recorded “Stuck in a Dream”, a tune John co-wrote with lyricist K. Lawrence Dunham, on her 2005 release, Remember Love.

John began his formal musical education at the age of 3 in Grand Rapids, MI on Suzuki violin, but quickly switched to classical piano lessons. His grandfather, Clyde Proulx, was a jazz guitarist who introduced him to the world of jazz. Hooked on the freedom of improvisation, his education took him to Chicago to study at Roosevelt University’s Chicago School of Performing Arts.  In 2001, John moved to Los Angeles to further his musical pursuits. He has emerged as a young talent on the Los Angeles jazz scene and loves the wide-range of opportunities the city has to offer.

John will soon move back to Michigan to complete his graduate work in music.  He has been a friend to CalJAS since its inception. We wish him luck and hope to have him back soon.

BARRY ZWEIG

“Barry Zweig is one of the most highly respected jazz guitarists on the LA music scene. A skilled accompanist and soloist, Barry’s love of the instrument shines through every aspect of his playing” writes noted acoustician and studio designer Jeff Cooper.

Barry was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 7th, 1942. His love for music came naturally. His mother, Diane, always had music playing on the radio and on the record player. She loved the great songs of the immortal composers of the “Great American Song Book”, especially George Gershwin. She loved to sing harmony parts to the songs that came on the radio. She taught Barry to clap on 2 and 4 when he was a little toddler.

In 1964 Barry was drafted into the Army. He had the incredibly good fortune to be assigned to the NORAD Band in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he got the opportunity to study with the legendary guitarist Johnny Smith. After his discharge from the Army he soon was called to join the Buddy Rich band. He played on two albums with Buddy Rich including one with Sammy Davis Jr. Sammy must have heard something he liked because he asked Barry to be his guitarist. Barry toured with Sammy Davis Jr. for fourteen months.

In 1968 Barry decided to settle down and break into the Los Angeles music scene. Since then Barry has played for, and/or recorded with Peggy Lee, Natalie Cole, Willie Bobo, Herb Alpert, Doc Severinson, Ray Conniff, Henry Mancini, Andy Williams, Bill Holman, Don Ellis, Gene Estes, Abe Most, Dave Pell, Keely Smith, Al McKibbon, Jackie Ryan and many others. He was the guitarist for Dinah Shore on her television show from 1976 until 1981.Barry has taught at UCLA, USC, and the University of Texas at El Paso. He enjoys teaching private students at his North Hollywood studio.

A multiple event performer for CalJAS audiences, we are pleased to welcome him back again!

REBECCA KILGORE-DAVE TULL HEADLINE CalJAS HOUSE CONCERT FEBRUARY, 28

As an interpreter of classic American popular songs from the 1930s and 1940s, vocalist and guitarist Rebecca Kilgore helped revive the hits of yesterday for modern-era jazz audiences. Born in Waltham, MA, in 1949, she relocated to Portland, OR, at the age of 30, beginning her music career fronting an area swing band dubbed the Wholly Cats and recording a 1982 LP titled Doggin’ Around. Following the group’s 1984 breakup, she formed her own unit, the Rebecca Kilgore Quintet, which quickly emerged as a mainstay of the Northwest jazz scene, and in 1989, she released the cassette-only I Hear Music. Most of Kilgore’s subsequent recordings were in conjunction with other performers: In 1990, she teamed with John Miller for Put on a Happy Face, and in 1993 appeared with Portland’s Tall Jazz Trio on their Plays Winter Jazz disc. However, Kilgore’s most fruitful collaborations were in conjunction with pianist Dave Frishberg; after teaming for 1993’s Looking at You, they reunited a year later for I Saw Stars, followed in 1997 by Not a Care in the World and again in 2001 with The Starlit Hour. At the same time, Kilgore also fronted a ’60s-style country band, Beck-a-Roo, and in 1994 contributed vocals to the score of the CBS animated special Tales From the Far Side, inspired by the popular Gary Larson comic strip. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
For twenty-five years Dave Tull has been known in the Los Angeles area as a world-class jazz drummer. In recent years, however, Dave has been making a name for himself as one of the country’s finest jazz vocalists. With his new CD, “I Just Want To Get Paid”, Dave cements that reputation, and adds songwriting to his list of talents.
Dave has toured the world since 2000 as drummer and lead vocalist for Chuck Mangione. Dave’s vocal on Mangione’s “The Children of Sanchez” and his bebop scat vocal on “Dizzymiles” has been featured at hundreds of concerts including The Playboy Jazz Festival at Hollywood Bowl and The Blue Note in New York City.
Singer Cheryl Bentyne (of the Manhattan Transfer) had Dave sing on two tracks of her CD “Moonlight Serenade” (King Records, 2003) including the song “Tull Tales”, so-named because Cheryl was so knocked out by Dave’s scat soloing! Three times Dave has performed with Bentyne for a week at Tokyo’s Cotton Club where he has sung a nightly duet with Cheryl on “Blue Moon”. Dave wrote the vocalese lyric for Bentyne on “All of You” for her 2009 Cole Porter Songbook CD.
Dave’s many original songs are available on his new CD, “I Just Want To Get Paid”. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/davetull The songs range from humorous to heartfelt. Put simply, they are future standards that are just being discovered! Many of Dave’s songs are tongue in cheek snap shots of moments familiar to the working musician. Dave wrote and arranged the hilarious “I Just Want To Get Paid” which he has performed with The Clare Fischer Big Band, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a47qzLB_7w , Buddy Childers Big Band, The Steve Huffsteter Big Band and the Ron Jones Influence Big Band. He also composed the wry “The Airplane Song” which he has performed live with the Les Brown Band.
Chuck Mangione is only one of many bands Dave plays drums with. Dave plays on four of singer Michael Buble’s CD’s including Buble’s notable version of “Moondance”. Dave has played drums for several recent episodes of the FOX TV show “Family Guy”.  Dave is on faculty at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, CA, teaching individual drum set lessons there. Dave has also been brought in by the jazz band director and even the jazz vocal professor at PCC to work with students on various aspects of playing and singing in the jazz style.
