Karen Hernandez Trio This Sunday, June 26

Karen Hernandez has been playing the piano since the age of four.  She came to California in the 60’s prompted and encouraged by piano great Gene Harris after he heard her perform in Salt Lake City.
Karen plays it all – standards, Latin and Gospel jazz – at its finest! She appeared for many years at the Money Tree in Toluca Lake, and Monteleone’s in Encino.
Always in demand as an accompanist, Karen has worked for many great singers: Marilyn King, Gloria Lynne, Johnny Hartman, Barbara  McNair, Herb Jeffries, Bill Henderson, and Lorez Alexandria to name a few.
Karen is the featured pianist for the annual “Instrumental Women” concert in Hollywood, and was herself the 2008 honoree of the Instrumental Women “Instrumental Woman of the Year” award.
Karen Hernandez’s credits include original songs and performances in the movies “PRETTY WOMAN” and “FABULOUS BAKER BOYS”, as well as, many albums and CD’s.

LUTHER HUGHES

Good friend and CalJAS House Concert Host, Luther is involved in the music business in a number of ways:

  • As a musician, he currently leads The Cannonball-Coltrane Project, as well asLuther Hughes & Friends: Remembering The Nat King Cole Trio, andH.E.R.K.  Artists he has performed include Quincy Jones, Joe Pass, Patti Page, and the Fifth Dimension.
  • As a record producer and music publisher, Luther heads up Primrose Lane Music, which he founded in 2004.
  • As an educator, Luther currently teaches at Cal State University in Fullerton Ca. and Saddleback College in Mission Viejo Ca. He has taught at Cal State University Long Beach Ca. , Goldenwest College in Huntington Beach Ca. , the Musicians Institute in Hollywood Ca., Rio Hondo College in Whittier Ca. and formerly served as the Southern California Regional Director for Bruce Forman’s JazzMasters Workshop.
 HAROLD MASON
Harold Mason is one of the most sought after drummers in Southern California. Harold’s recording and performing career is extensive.
Artists he has performed or recorded with include Stevie Wonder, Freddie Cole, Aretha Franklin,
Buddy Collette, Rickey Woodard, Lavern Baker, and Jon Mayer, to name a few.
No stranger to CalJAS, Harold has performed for us multiple times, and we are honored to feature him once again!

CalJAS Performs for Fundraiser

CalJAS was recently honored to perform for the Assistance League of Pomona Valley’s annual golf tournament fundraiser at Red Hills Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga. 

Performers were Bradley Young-piano, Bruce Forman-guitar, and Luther Hughes on bass.

3:00 til 5:00 PM  on Saturdays. The show has a broader jazz format, still primarily straight-ahead and jazz related vocals but sprinkled with other genres like Dixieland, Latin, fusion, smooth, free jazz, etc
