About Artie Shaw :
A Clarinetist,composer,bandleader and actor.   Also an author, Shaw wrote both fiction and non-fiction.

Artie Shaw’s “innovations, musical depth, and swinging style placed him firmly in the pantheon of 20th century big band and jazz musicians,” according to Claudia Luther in the Los Angeles Times.

Widely regarded as “one of jazz’s finest clarinetists,” Shaw led one of the United States’ most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Though he had numerous hit records, he was perhaps best known for his 1938 recording of
Cole Porter‘s Begin the Beguine

About Tom Ranier 
Tom plays piano , clarinet and sax. He has recorded widely under his own name and as a sideman for Warner Bros.Concord Records and several other labels.He has been prominent in the film, television, and music recording industry since the 1970s. He has played keyboards, woodwinds and writing music for a long list of assignments, including GrammyAcademy AwardEmmy, Dancing with the Stars and Golden GlobeSoundtracks for artists such as Barbra StreisandShirley BasseyMichael FeinsteinChristina AguileraJoe PassPlácido DomingoBarry ManilowNatalie Cole, and many others.
About Brian Atkinson: 
Trumpeter/vibraphonist /composer/arranger  Brian Atkinson, who has been in the Disneyland Band for 30 years, has appeared with Lou Rawls, Jackie and Roy, Art Van Damme, Denise Williams (who toured with Earth Wind and Fire), Natalie Cole, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

LUTHER HUGHES

Good friend and CalJAS House Concert Host, Luther is involved in the music business in a number of ways:

  • As a musician, he currently leads The Cannonball-Coltrane Project, as well asLuther Hughes & Friends: Remembering The Nat King Cole Trio, andH.E.R.K.  Artists he has performed include Quincy Jones, Joe Pass, Patti Page, and the Fifth Dimension.
  • As a record producer and music publisher, Luther heads up Primrose Lane Music, which he founded in 2004.
  • As an educator, Luther currently teaches at Cal State University in Fullerton Ca. and Saddleback College in Mission Viejo Ca. He has taught at Cal State University Long Beach Ca. , Goldenwest College in Huntington Beach Ca. , the Musicians Institute in Hollywood Ca., Rio Hondo College in Whittier Ca. and formerly served as the Southern California Regional Director for Bruce Forman’s JazzMasters Workshop.

CalJAS Presents LOLLY ALLEN QUARTET November 13

LOLLY ALLEN

Laura “Lolly” Allen’s music “…conjures the lanky, leisurely feel of Milt Jackson, her roomy rambles open up the spiritual spaciousness of Walt Dickerson, and her smooth flair for Latin rhythms recalls Cal Tjader.”– Fred Bouchard (writer for Downbeat Magazine and teacher at Berklee College of Music.) 

She has been featured on radio and at venues including the Knitting Factory, Vibrato Grill Jazz, Boston Globe Jazz Festival, artist-in-residence with Stan Strickland at Boston’s Museum of Fine Art, WGBH FM’s Eric in the Evening and Ron DellaChiesa\’s Jazz Songbook. Allen has composed and performed in various ensembles including Gunther Schuller\’s Birthday Celebration Concert, Sam Rivers with the New England Conservatory Big Band, Maria Schneider with the Jazz Composer\’s Alliance, The Jimmy Giuffre Tribute Concert at Jordan Hall, the L.A Jazz Society’s Vibe Summit, and with Jiggs Whigham and Bob Mintzer at the Disney Jazz Celebration.

She has studied with many jazz greats: Danilo Perez, George Garzone, Cecil McBee, John McNeil, Bevan Manson, Steve Brown, Dominique Eade, and has received classical training with world-renowned percussionist Gordon Stout. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance from New England Conservatory.
