Friday April 28-CalJAS Presents: ANDREA MILLER HOUSE CONCERT with Mark Massey-Luther Hughes

ANDREA MILLER

“A brilliant young singer” – Al Jarreau

Andrea Miller’s voice has been described as soulful, sensual, hypnotic and endearing. Influenced by Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan and Stevie Wonder, Andrea is currently heating up the jazz scene coast to coast and receiving national airplay. Andrea recently opened for the legendary Al Jarreau at the Newport Beach Jazz Festival.  She received a standing ovation and gracious compliments from Jarreau and his band.  In April 2016 she opened for Vincent Ingala in Florida, and most recently she opened for Al Jarreau again in North Carolina in September 2016.

A member of SAG and ASCAP, Andrea’s performances have gained critical acclaim at venues such as The Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Pasadena Jazz Institute, Baked Potato, Spaghettini, Catalina Jazz Club, Vibrato, Charlie O’s, Casselberry Jazz Festival and others.    Andrea had the honor to work with David Foster, Quincy Jones and Alan & Marilyn Bergman when recording a vocal demo for CELINE DION “I Knew I Loved You”. Originally trained in opera at a young age, Andrea won first place in the Oregon State Vocal Competition first soprano category when only 14 years old. She then went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from USC.

In addition to performing, Andrea keeps busy recording as a session singer. Her voice can be heard on recordings by Disney/Pixar, Paramount Pictures, NBC, ABC, Samsung, Warner Brothers, EMI, Mattel Toys, and others.

Andrea has three albums available on ITunes and all digital download sites – “Imagine”, “II By II” and “Peak Experience Jazz – Live at Lucy’s Place”.  In 2016 Andrea will release her fourth album “Maybe Today” with producer Michael Cunningham.

QUOTES ABOUT ANDREA

“As my countdown to stage got smaller and smaller, I started to hear some marvelous music coming from the stage, floating through my dressing room window. Our opening act was a brilliant young singer named Andrea Miller. The whole band was impressed with her song selection, with her bandmates, arrangements, and her jazz sensibilities. I enjoyed listening the little bit I got to, and the band enjoyed their even closer look.” (Al Jarreau)

“As I told Andrea after she sang The Masquerade is Over, she owns that tune. In all my years in this business playing with the best jazz singers Carmen McCrea, Anita O’Day, Peggy Lee etc., I never heard anyone sing it as good” (Pat Senatore)

“Andrea will get to your heart even if she sings in the middle of a boat in the sea. What she does has nothing to do with being in L.A., London, Paris or whatever. It has to do with artistic commitment and love for every note she sings, and that’s how great artists act, don’t you think?” (IAC.com)

“She’s very charming, personable and attractive and sings with a lot of emotion”.  “Her delivery is soft and sensual, almost hypnotic.  She sings with confidence”.  (L.A. Jazz Scene)

“Everybody’s heard the old standard, ‘Cry Me A River,’ every long, drawn-out sob story milked within an inch of its life. Miller as the vocalist gives each line just the right amount of pathos, verve, and snap. She isn’t the kind of singer to wallow in the pitiful aspects, but to turn up the rebound several notches for a refreshing take.” (AXS)

“Listening to her music, it is easy to see why she was honored, her honest, touching lyrics are delivered by her strong, soulful voice in such a divine way that you can’t help but be drawn in. After seeing her flawless live performance of the old standard ‘My Funny Valentine’, I realized that this is one artist who deserves all the accolades and awards she gets. Andrea has a captivating quality about her that commands your attention and earns your praise.  Andrea is definitely an artist worth listening to.”  (Indie-Connections.com)

APRIL 23 CalJAS House Concert: The Music of Brazil with Mark Isbell

MARK ISBELL
Mark is a native of Southern California, and grew up in Huntington Beach. He was raised in a musical family; his father  was a professional saxophonist, and his mother played the vibes and was always singing around the house. Music was constantly in the air, and Mark was reared on the sounds of everyone from Stan Getz to The Beatles.
Mark’s first instrument was the clarinet, starting on the alto sax later at about age 12.
After high school, Mark remained in Orange County and attended Golden West and Orange Coast colleges.  While at Golden West, Mark studied with renowned saxophonist Tom Kubis.
Mark enrolled at the famed Berklee College of Music where he was fortunate to meet and study with saxophone legend Phil Woods, an experience that continues to provide inspiration even today. Mark returned to California and started his first professional gigs.
In 2001, Mark teamed up with guitarist and co-producer Peter Sprague to release his first recoding as a leader “Jazz Influence” on SBE records, along with pianist Mike Wofford, bassist Bob Magnusson, and drummer John Guerin. Brasilian jazz is Mark’s great passion. His 2nd CD “Samba Copacabana” was recorded in Rio de Janeiro with a host of Rio’s top players, and released in 2009 to critical acclaim.
ANA BARREIRO
Ana  is a jazz drummer based in Los Angeles who carries her Brazilian roots to various musical situations.
“Barreiro was a constant source of joy the entire evening with a very clear and precise ride cymbal sound” – Robert Bush, jazz critic NBC San Diego.
Originally from Poços de Caldas, a town in the Southeast of Brazil, she was awarded a Latin America Scholarship from Berklee College of Music and made the move to Boston in 2009. She then relocated to Los Angeles in 2013 to pursue a Masters Degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California where she studied with Peter Erskine and worked as his Teacher Assistant.
As an active drummer in the Los Angeles Jazz scene she has had the opportunity to perform with Larry Koonse, Catina DeLuna, Bob Sheppard, Darek Oles, Edwin Livingston, Scott Healy, Kirsten Edkins, Isaac Smith, Bruce Forman, Amy K Bormet and is currently the drummer for Grammy Nominated pianist Otmaro Ruiz.
Ana is on the Faculty at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, and at the Stanford Jazz Workshop.

Surrounded by the music and song of his family and their lively cultural activity of the neighborhood where he was raised, Kleber’s innate musical talents were soon recognized and nurtured. He was given his first guitar at the age of eight and by the time he was a teenager, he was entertaining professionally.
After recording and performing in Rio Kleber came to LA in 1988 to learn, develop, and improve his skills as a guitarist. Studying guitar with Ted Greene and arranging and composing with Moair Santos he began playing with his own group throughout California and has delighted audiences at concerts and festivals.

Kleber has toured thoughout the US, Asia, and Europe and performed with such noted jazz performers as Sergio Mendes and John Patitucci

ABOUT LIA BOOTH: Lia spent four years singing in advanced vocal jazz ensemble Singcopation under the direction of Bruce Rogers and one year singing with Cal State Long Beach advanced vocal jazz ensemble Pacific Standard Time under the direction of accomplished vocalist and session singer, Christine Guter. She specializes in the Great American Songbook, sings in French, Spanish, Portuguese, as well as English, and takes a dry, expressive approach to her interpretation of the tunes she sings. She regularly performs at venues across Southern California, and currently holds two residencies where she performs once a month: The Brass Lamp in Long Beach with her own trio The Spare Buttons and Port Restaurant and Bar in Newport Beach as a duo with pianist Bradley Young. A twice named CalJAS Student Scholarship recipient, we are proud to feature Lia at this concert.

ABOUT BRADLEY YOUNG:  Currently based in Los Angeles, Bradley can be seen setting the mood at many of his favorite romantic jazz nightspots, including The Pilsner Room, The Aldabella Winery, The Port, Cook’s Chapel, and the world famous Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach. He also created a stir at the Newport Beach Jazz Party with his “Tribute to Gene Harris” (one of Bradley’s favorite pianists), featuring guitar legends Ron Eschete and Frank Potenza, along with sax great Scott Hamilton, Luther Hughes on bass, and Paul Kreibich on drums.  Bradley’s talent also shines brilliantly on Enja Records’ recently pressed “Chet In Chicago”, a previously unreleased studio session featuring jazz trumpet legend Chet Baker, with Bradley on piano. Recorded in 1986, the CD also features Larry Gray on bass and the late Rusty Jones on drums. This superb recording is available on Amazon and E-Bay. This will be Bradley’s second CalJAS House Concert performance.
ABOUT BENJAMIN MAY :  The son of classically trained parents, Benjamin is one of the most in demand players in LA . His credits include gigs with Rosemary Clooney, Anita O’Day and the great Joe Pass to name just a few. CalJAS is proud to once again present this fine musician.
