CalJAS Presents: BRUCE AND PAMMY FORMAN 10/15/17
Bruce Forman, Guitar. “Swingin’ Out West is where you’ll find him,” they all said in hushed tones, a faraway look in their eyes. “Forman’s the name, bebop’s the game. He’ll help you…never met a note he didn’t like.” |
Pinto Pammy, Vocals. The sun was high, the air was still, a day so hot the dust was sweating. In rode a redhead on a pinto pony, singing and yodeling. Legend has it she was raised by Comanche, others opine that she was left in a shopping mall by Scottish settlers. She was headed for parts unknown when she fell in with a band of renegade beboppers and ended up ‘Swingin’ Out West’. |

KRISTIN KORB CONCERT TO BENEFIT CalJAS STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Kristin Korb-vocals/bass
“A protégé of the late Ray Brown, Ms. Korb’s bass playing is the foundation of her musicianship. She is an increasingly clever lyricist in the songs she writes, arranges and sings.” Doug Ramsey, Rifftides
There are few bassists who can sing and there are even fewer who can do it well. Kristin Korb is one of those artists who make you forget that she is playing the bass when you hear her crystalline voice. Inspired by the days when music was romantic and made you want to dance, Kristin and her trio embody that spirit and carry their audiences along for the ride.
Korb is no stranger to the California coast having lived here for a number of years. She earned her masters degree in Classical Bass Performance at the University of California, San Diego and was lucky enough to have studied with the great bassist Ray Brown, with whom she made her recording debut, “Introducing Kristin Korb with the Ray Brown Trio” released in 1996. Love eventually brought the American bassist and vocalist to Denmark in 2011.
Korb now returns to California for a series of concerts to celebrate her 8th release, “Beyond the Moon”. Inspired by the storytelling of one of America’s greatest lyricists, Johnny Mercer, Kristin includes several of his biggest hits and then takes a voyage of discovery into unpublished texts that Mercer never made into songs.
Kristin has been a longtime friend of CalJAS and has been very supportive of our organization since its inception.
Andy Langham – Piano
Andy Langham studied Jazz Perfomance at The University of North Texas. Since relocating to Los Angeles a number of years ago, he has toured with just about everyone from Natalie Cole to Christian McBride and the New York Voices. Currently Andy is a member of Poncho Sanchez’s Latin Jazz Band and can been seen touring all over the world with Poncho. When he’s not on the road, Langham can be found teaching Jazz Piano at California State University, Long Beach.
Andy is a repeat performer for CalJAS
Ryan Korb – Drums
Ryan is the go-to drummer in Wisconsin for all kinds of great musicians traveling through the state. After music school, the Montana native sought out some of the most influential musicians in the country to study drumming and jazz. Drum set great Jeff Hamilton and master Afro-Cuban musician Michael Spiro have been two of his greatest mentors and inspirations.
Ryan has spent extensive time studying music abroad in India and Cuba. Ryan now co-leads the Afro-Cuban drum trio, Africa->West. The trio plays original compositions based on traditional West African and Cuban music. In addition to their residency at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in Cleveland, Ohio, the group has released 4 recordings.
As a sideman, Ryan has performed with Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Bill Mays, Russell Malone, Byron Stripling, John Fedchock, Llew Matthews, Tamir Hendelman, Valerie Naranjo (SNL orchestra), and Barry Olsen. In addition to drum set, Ryan has performed as percussionist on the touring Broadway productions of Wicked, Spamalot, and others. Ryan has played on numerous recordings and has been seen at many jazz festivals and venues internationally. He is also on faculty at Baldwin Wallace University, Lawrence University, and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Ryan also happens to be Kristin’s brother. They grew up playing music together when it was more of a competitive sport than a collaborative activity. They’ve both grown up over the years, but one can still see the sibling banter happening on the bandstand.
This will be Ryan’s first performance for CalJAS

CalJAS PRESENTS JUNE 17: LUTHER HUGHES AND FRIENDS-TRIBUTE TO NAT KING COLE
In 2007, Luther assembled a group of friends to perform music from the Nat King Cole Trio. Modeled after the drummerless line-up of the ’40s & ’50s King Cole Trio, the group consists of John Proulx on vocals and piano, Barry Zweig on guitar, and Luther Hughes on bass. Luther’s trio performs regularly in the Southern California area, offering a great blend of narrative information and the music of the early King Cole trio.
JOHN PROULX
The jazz scene has been abuzz about singer/pianist/composer John Proulx (pronounced “Prue”) for over decade now. His piano playing is hot and swinging, and his voice recalls the smooth, mellow sounds of a young Chet Baker. John’s debut CD, “Moon and Sand”,on the Maxjazz label, was released on August 1st, 2006, and featured legendary musicians Chuck Berghofer and Joe LaBarbera, and was produced by Tamir Hendelman. The CD garnered national and international acclaim. In addition to his own trio, John has performed with the likes of Anita O’Day, Natalie Cole, and Marian McPartland.
John is also a Grammy-winning composer. Jazz legend, Nancy Wilson, recorded “These Golden Years”, a song that John co-wrote with lyricist D. Channsin Berry, for her 2006 Grammy-winning CD, Turned to Blue. Jazz singer, Mary Stallings, also recorded “Stuck in a Dream”, a tune John co-wrote with lyricist K. Lawrence Dunham, on her 2005 release, Remember Love.
John began his formal musical education at the age of 3 in Grand Rapids, MI on Suzuki violin, but quickly switched to classical piano lessons. His grandfather, Clyde Proulx, was a jazz guitarist who introduced him to the world of jazz. Hooked on the freedom of improvisation, his education took him to Chicago to study at Roosevelt University’s Chicago School of Performing Arts. In 2001, John moved to Los Angeles to further his musical pursuits. He has emerged as a young talent on the Los Angeles jazz scene and loves the wide-range of opportunities the city has to offer.
John will soon move back to Michigan to complete his graduate work in music. He has been a friend to CalJAS since its inception. We wish him luck and hope to have him back soon.
BARRY ZWEIG
“Barry Zweig is one of the most highly respected jazz guitarists on the LA music scene. A skilled accompanist and soloist, Barry’s love of the instrument shines through every aspect of his playing” writes noted acoustician and studio designer Jeff Cooper.
Barry was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 7th, 1942. His love for music came naturally. His mother, Diane, always had music playing on the radio and on the record player. She loved the great songs of the immortal composers of the “Great American Song Book”, especially George Gershwin. She loved to sing harmony parts to the songs that came on the radio. She taught Barry to clap on 2 and 4 when he was a little toddler.
In 1964 Barry was drafted into the Army. He had the incredibly good fortune to be assigned to the NORAD Band in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he got the opportunity to study with the legendary guitarist Johnny Smith. After his discharge from the Army he soon was called to join the Buddy Rich band. He played on two albums with Buddy Rich including one with Sammy Davis Jr. Sammy must have heard something he liked because he asked Barry to be his guitarist. Barry toured with Sammy Davis Jr. for fourteen months.
In 1968 Barry decided to settle down and break into the Los Angeles music scene. Since then Barry has played for, and/or recorded with Peggy Lee, Natalie Cole, Willie Bobo, Herb Alpert, Doc Severinson, Ray Conniff, Henry Mancini, Andy Williams, Bill Holman, Don Ellis, Gene Estes, Abe Most, Dave Pell, Keely Smith, Al McKibbon, Jackie Ryan and many others. He was the guitarist for Dinah Shore on her television show from 1976 until 1981.Barry has taught at UCLA, USC, and the University of Texas at El Paso. He enjoys teaching private students at his North Hollywood studio.
A multiple event performer for CalJAS audiences, we are pleased to welcome him back again!
