WELCOME BACK TO THE CALIFORNIA JAZZ ARTS SOCIETY

Incorporated as The California Jazz Arts Society (CalJAS) in January 2005, we now  begin our 15th season as a nonprofit presenting and promoting jazz in intimate settings.

In addition to our continuing schedule of House Concerts, CalJAS in 2019 will continue and expand our collaboration with Claremont Presbyterian Church including the
well received Jazz Vespers series featuring Debbi Ebert and the Ron Kobayashi Trio.  Additionally, we are working out details to add a limited CalJAS PRESENTS series at this venue. CalJAS and CPC are also making plans to schedule jazz clinics for high schoolers, as well as adults.

We are excited to announce that CalJAS at The Magic Castle will continue during the summer of 2019 but will move to Tuesdays. Those of you who have attended any of the past 25 concerts know how special these events are.
Dates will be announced soon!

Once again, we will be encouraging you to renew your membership for 2019, and to help spread the word in order to recruit new members and contributors. One of our continuing goals is to identify and welcome the business community to our CalJAS family as Platinum Sponsors, Benefactors, or underwriters for our programs and scholarships, and to stay ahead of increased expenditures.

The California Jazz Arts Society Presents: Gretje Angell and Dori Amarillio-MAY 27

COMING
Sunday
May 27
7:00-9:30
THE CALIFORNIA JAZZ ARTS SOCIETY
 PRESENTS
GRETJE ANGELL AND DORI AMARILLIO

DORI AMARILLIO was born into music in Tel Aviv, Israel. The son of a classically-trained violinist and award-winning composer, he was exposed to music from day one. He studied guitar at age 9, played professionally at 14, composed music at 16 and was a music director by age 17. He studied composition at the Berkley-endorsed School of Music Rimon, the Hollywood Musician’s Institute and the UCLA film scoring program.

Dori landed in Los Angeles after being hired as a musical director for a three-month tour, playing every major city in South America. Performing with top musicians in the L.A. jazz scene earned Dori the reputation as a highly-regarded and extremely versatile guitar player with a special passion for Brazilian music.

Years in recording studios won him awards and the reputation of a sought after composer, producer and highly intuitive score mixer in the Film, TV and Video Game industry. His diverse portfolio features projects that range from working with legendary songwriter Mike Stoller on the album Amazon Moon, to composing for Oscar-winning director Charles Jarot; from scoring a national Pontiac commercial to composing cross-cultural music for theater; from composing cutting edge TV music to producing orchestral soundtracks for major game titles utilizing Hollywood, Seattle and a range of European orchestras.

Overdue for a Grammy nomination, Dori is currently working on a unique project arranging traditional Brazilian music for a full orchestra. The first cut features world renowned percussionist Airto Moreira, with Dori conducting the Seattle symphony. Composing music for pictures is Dori’s primary passion. His scores benefit from his diverse musical background and experience, coupled with the expertise of producing soundtracks for picture. His music can be heard daily on several major network TV shows.

GRETJE ANGELL entrances with her dulcet tones and brings the audience along on a journey with her throughout her performances. Originally hailing from Akron, OH, as a third generation musician, music has been in her heart and soul from an early age.

Mainly influenced by Anita O’Day, Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, and Carmen McRae, Gretje’s sense of rhythm and phrasing – with a pure, even tone to match – is inspired by these jazz greats. Her tongue dances lightly over both Brazilian rhythms and swing, giving into the music with improvisational performances, making her a tour de force on the scene and rivaling contemporary vocalists such as the much admired Cyrille Aimee and Diana Krall.

She can currently be heard performing with guitarist/music producer, Dori Amarilio, who is producing her much-anticipated upcoming debut album, as well as the acclaimed Ladd McIntosh Swing Orchestra, Jack’s Cats – a swing sextet, and Glen Garrett’s Big Band, in addition to her own configurations of artists.

Gretje is also a professionally trained opera singer, performing in Los Angeles. In 2013, she joined the Los Angeles Metropolitan Opera Company and has had the great pleasure of performing Pamina in The Magic Flute, Ilia in Idomeneo, Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera, Tebaldo in Don Carlo, and the Voice of the High Priestess in Aida.

Whether she’s performing jazz or using her beautiful lyric coloratura soprano voice in an opera, Gretje brings takes the audience on a fantastical journey with each performance she gives.

Gretje lives in Los Angeles and performs nationally and internationally. A purist at heart, and working with the world’s top musicians, has solidified Gretje’s role as the darling of the underground jazz scene – where Jazz is Jazz.

THE CALIFORNIA JAZZ ARTS SOCIETY PRESENTS: Kristin Korb and Andy Langham

THE CALIFORNIA JAZZ ARTS SOCIETY PRESENTS:

 HOUSE CONCERT

with

KRISTIN KORB AND ANDY LANGHAM

APRIL 8

There are few bassists who can sing and there are even fewer who can do it well. Kristin Korb is one of those artists who make you forget that she is playing the bass when you hear her crystalline voice. Inspired by the days when music was romantic and made you want to dance, Kristin and her trio embody that spirit and carry their audiences along for the ride. Love eventually brought the American bassist and vocalist to Denmark in 2011.

Korb earned her Music Education degree at Eastern Montana College and her masters in Classical Bass Performance the University of California, San Diego. It was while she was a student at UCSD that her professor, Bertram Turetzky inspired her to sing and play bass at the same time. She also studied with Ray Brown, with whom she made her recording debut, Introducing Kristin Korb with the Ray Brown Trio released in 1996.

She has taught at the University of Southern California where she was coordinator of vocal jazz studies, Azuza Pacific University, Grossmont Community College and was Director of Jazz Studies at Central Washington University. Korb is still very involved in educational outreach and teaches at universities, jazz camps and festivals with young students.

As President of the International Society of Bassists, Korb was artistic director for the 2013 ISB Convention in Rochester, NY (Eastman School of Music).

Kristin tours across the world and has performed with jazz artists such as Llew Matthews, Kim Richmond, Pete Christlieb, Jeff Hamilton, Alex Riel and Jan Lundgren.

She now lives in Denmark with her Danish husband. When she’s not playing music, Kristin enjoys going to the gym, maintaining her position as family salad ninja, and exploring the world of wine tasting through travel.

Andy studied Jazz Perfomance at The University of North Texas. Currently Andy is a member of Poncho Sanchez’s Latin Jazz Band and can been seen touring all over the world with Poncho. He also tours with or has toured with Big Bad VooDoo Daddy, Natalie Cole, Christopher Cross, John Heard, Christian McBride, Jane Monheit, New York Voices, Ray Price, Dewey Redman, Steve Tyrell, and Ernie Watts. Andy has recorded or performed in concert with John Abercrombie, Mike Barone, Gary Bartz, Terence Blanchard, Arthur Blythe, Debby Boone, Randy Brecker, Bobby Caldwell, Charo, Alvin Chea, Pete Christlieb, The Coasters, Ravi Coltrane, Larry Coryell, Jon Fedchock, The Four Freshmen, Terry Gibbs, Gerry Gibbs, Tom Harrell, Jon Hendricks, Bill Holman, Flaco Jimenez, Lainey Kazan, Sally Kellerman, Azar Lawrence, Hubert Laws, Dave Liebman, Don Menza, Roy McCurdy, James Moody, Emilio Navaira, Willie Nelson, Wayne Newton, Andreas Oberg, Alan Paul, The Platters, Kim Richmond, Sam Rivers, Christian Scott, Bobby Shew, Lew Soloff, Mike Stern, Take Six, Clark Terry, Steve Turre, and Bill Watrous.
