“Bruce Forman is one of the great lights of our age.” – Barney Kessel
A busy touring schedule; seventeen recordings as a leader; countless sideman
recording dates–including a featured role on one of jazz great Ray Brown’s last albums;
soundtrack performances on three of Clint Eastwood’s distinguished films–the Oscar-winning
Million Dollar Baby, Oscar-nominated Flags of Our Fathers and Hereafter ; producer, arranger,
and acclaimed educator; over twenty appearances at the landmark Monterey Jazz Festival;
in residence at USC ’s Studio / Jazz Guitar Dept.—when does Bruce Forman rest? Forman is a
seasoned jazz player with top-level skills as a leader, entertainer and sideman.
He creates soulful, lyrical melodies, inventive harmonies, and solid accompaniment.
Though he can shred bebop at blistering tempos with the best of ‘em, he is no urban snob.
Cow Bop, Forman’s unique “western bebop” band, hit four separate charts with its CDs,
Swingin’ Out West, Route 66, Too Hick for the Room and Cowlifornia Swing. In May 2014,
Cow Bop was inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame.
Forman is also a distinguished music educator and in-kind philanthropist. His national music-mentoring
program, JazzMasters Workshop, provided over 2,500 sessions for young students.
Always free of charge, JazzMasters’ sessions occurred during after-school hours, and the program
enriched lives and helped develop numerous musicians who have gone on to promising careers.
One of the most generous musicians anywhere, Bruce has performed numerous times for CalJAS audiences.
CalJAS PRESENTS JUNE 17: LUTHER HUGHES AND FRIENDS-TRIBUTE TO NAT KING COLE
In 2007, Luther assembled a group of friends to perform music from the Nat King Cole Trio. Modeled after the drummerless line-up of the ’40s & ’50s King Cole Trio, the group consists of John Proulx on vocals and piano, Barry Zweig on guitar, and Luther Hughes on bass. Luther’s trio performs regularly in the Southern California area, offering a great blend of narrative information and the music of the early King Cole trio.
JOHN PROULX
The jazz scene has been abuzz about singer/pianist/composer John Proulx (pronounced “Prue”) for over decade now. His piano playing is hot and swinging, and his voice recalls the smooth, mellow sounds of a young Chet Baker. John’s debut CD, “Moon and Sand”,on the Maxjazz label, was released on August 1st, 2006, and featured legendary musicians Chuck Berghofer and Joe LaBarbera, and was produced by Tamir Hendelman. The CD garnered national and international acclaim. In addition to his own trio, John has performed with the likes of Anita O’Day, Natalie Cole, and Marian McPartland.
John is also a Grammy-winning composer. Jazz legend, Nancy Wilson, recorded “These Golden Years”, a song that John co-wrote with lyricist D. Channsin Berry, for her 2006 Grammy-winning CD, Turned to Blue. Jazz singer, Mary Stallings, also recorded “Stuck in a Dream”, a tune John co-wrote with lyricist K. Lawrence Dunham, on her 2005 release, Remember Love.
John began his formal musical education at the age of 3 in Grand Rapids, MI on Suzuki violin, but quickly switched to classical piano lessons. His grandfather, Clyde Proulx, was a jazz guitarist who introduced him to the world of jazz. Hooked on the freedom of improvisation, his education took him to Chicago to study at Roosevelt University’s Chicago School of Performing Arts. In 2001, John moved to Los Angeles to further his musical pursuits. He has emerged as a young talent on the Los Angeles jazz scene and loves the wide-range of opportunities the city has to offer.
John will soon move back to Michigan to complete his graduate work in music. He has been a friend to CalJAS since its inception. We wish him luck and hope to have him back soon.
BARRY ZWEIG
“Barry Zweig is one of the most highly respected jazz guitarists on the LA music scene. A skilled accompanist and soloist, Barry’s love of the instrument shines through every aspect of his playing” writes noted acoustician and studio designer Jeff Cooper.
Barry was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 7th, 1942. His love for music came naturally. His mother, Diane, always had music playing on the radio and on the record player. She loved the great songs of the immortal composers of the “Great American Song Book”, especially George Gershwin. She loved to sing harmony parts to the songs that came on the radio. She taught Barry to clap on 2 and 4 when he was a little toddler.
In 1964 Barry was drafted into the Army. He had the incredibly good fortune to be assigned to the NORAD Band in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he got the opportunity to study with the legendary guitarist Johnny Smith. After his discharge from the Army he soon was called to join the Buddy Rich band. He played on two albums with Buddy Rich including one with Sammy Davis Jr. Sammy must have heard something he liked because he asked Barry to be his guitarist. Barry toured with Sammy Davis Jr. for fourteen months.
In 1968 Barry decided to settle down and break into the Los Angeles music scene. Since then Barry has played for, and/or recorded with Peggy Lee, Natalie Cole, Willie Bobo, Herb Alpert, Doc Severinson, Ray Conniff, Henry Mancini, Andy Williams, Bill Holman, Don Ellis, Gene Estes, Abe Most, Dave Pell, Keely Smith, Al McKibbon, Jackie Ryan and many others. He was the guitarist for Dinah Shore on her television show from 1976 until 1981.Barry has taught at UCLA, USC, and the University of Texas at El Paso. He enjoys teaching private students at his North Hollywood studio.
A multiple event performer for CalJAS audiences, we are pleased to welcome him back again!

Scott Whitfield Bad Ass Trombone
Scott Whitfield (trombonist, composer, arranger, and vocalist) is internationally recognized for his work with contemporary big bands, including those of Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bob Florence, Clare Fischer, Johnny Mandel, Bill Holman, Phil Norman Tentet, Glen Miller Orchestra, Stan Kenton Alumni Band and Jimmy Dorsey Band, as well as his own Scott Whitfield Jazz Orchestras (East AND West). In addition to Scott’s own recordings, his compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded by such artists as Diva, Maurice Hines, The Pied Pipers, The Modernaires, Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band, and Pete Petersen’s 23-strong Collection Jazz Orchestra.
Scott’s playing, writing, and singing have been compared to that of some of his biggest influences, including Carl Fontana, Frank Rosolino, Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico, Mel Torme, and Jack Jones. While jazz ensemble composition and arranging is his forte, he’s arranged for the Omaha Philharmonic and The New York City Pops Orchestra.
Settling in New York in 1993, Scott became a member of the Nat Adderley Sextet, which also included Jimmy Cobb, Walter Booker, Vincent Herring and Rob Bargad. The group’s engagements at Sweet Basil led to fruitful associations with Nnenna Freelon, Frank Wess, Lionel Hampton, Wayne Andre, and many others. He has also performed in many Broadway show orchestras, and backed the likes of Robert Goulet, Rita Moreno, Marilyn McCoo, Vic Damone, Jack Jones, Nancy Wilson, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Patti Austin, and a host of others.
Scott served on the jazz faculty at Rutgers University from 1998 to 2002, teaching trombone, composition and arranging, and improvisation, while also coordinating the school’s combo program. Scott is a Getzen artist, and has appeared throughout the world, from Australia to Zurich, sharing his expertise on trombone technique, improvisation, composition, arranging, and jazz history. The Scott Whitfield Jazz Orchestra (first founded in 1986, while Scott was pursuing his Master’s degree at North Texas State University) now has two incarnations: the SWJO East, based in New York; and the SWJO West, based in Whitfield’s new home of Los Angeles. Both of these aggregations feature the top players in the business. For more than a year, the SWJO East was in residence at New York’s Birdland, the Jazz Corner of the World.
Ginger Berglund
Ginger Berglund is honored to carry on the legacies of June Christy and Anita O’Day with the Stan Kenton Alumni Band. Her multi-faceted career now includes singing with The Modernaires, the quintessential close harmony vocal group featured with the Glen Miller Orchestra. She also duets with her husband, Scott Whitfield, renowned trombonist, arranger and singer.
She recorded for the Tonight Show originator and host, Steve Allen, and with the great pianist Paul Smith. She has sung duets with the smooth and soaring voice of Kenny Rankin. While in college, she sang with the St. Olaf Choir and managed to also perform in St. Olaf’s music theatre, including a “Jacques Brel is Alive And Well…” and a Lincoln Center Theatre award winning “Godspell”.
Ginger is most proud of “Dreamsville”, her duo album with Scott. It’s full of smooth harmonies reminiscent of Jackie Cain & Roy Kral’s vocal creations and Scott’s “swingmeister” arrangements. It features a comprehensive and stunning solo interpretation of the Fran Landesman/Tommy Wolf song, “Listen, Little Girl” with the Grammy award winning pianist and arranger, Bob Florence.
Ginger cut her teeth in the music business working for the great Brazilian jazz vocalist Flora Purim and her husband, the premiere fusion jazz percussionist Airto Moreira. She is a featured singer with many local Los Angeles bands including the Tracy Wells Big Band, the Scott Whitfield Jazz Orchestra, and the Jumpin’ Joz Band. She’s worked acting and singing in commercials, and recorded for many songwriters, both classical and popular.
Admitted to the Screen Actor’s Guild for her work in the comedy movie “Kiss My Grits, ” she also appeared in the Martin Scorsese film “The King of Comedy” in the “Marty undercover” scene with Jerry Lewis and Tony Randall.
Daughter of a rocket engineer and a professional Girl Scout, Ginger is a native of Pasadena, CA. She knows the Girl Scout “fake book” by heart. She was the cornerstone of her little Lutheran church kid’s choir, got her first break at 16, debuting with Pasadena’s favorite choral director, Jim Coday, and singing with his group “Vanity Fair” at Ronald Reagan’s Gubernatorial Inaugural Ball. The group performed at every major hotel venue in LA, and at the Dodger Stadium Fourth of July Family Show and Mitzi Gaynor’s Christmas Show at LA’s Shrine Auditorium.
Ginger’s talents have led her, until recently, to hang on to her “day job” and thank her lucky stars for their breadth and legacy. She worked for Jane Fonda’s Workout. She helped to start the University of California at San Diego’s Rady School of Mgt. While at UCLA’s Anderson School of Business, her work with international MBA schools gave her opportunities to sing all over the world during academic conferences. Her commuter image, (while singing, of course) is permanently etched into the artwork of the Pasadena Gold Line, Lake Metro station west.
Jeff Colella is one of LA’s busiest jazz pianists. Besides performing in concert as a solo artist and with his trio, he maintains a very active schedule as an accompanist, recording artist, arranger, clinician and teacher. Jeff’s most recent recording is a collaboration with the veteran bassist Putter Smith that will be released in early 2013. He has two other releases as leader, “Alone Together” and “Letting Go,” both trio recordings and both on Sea Breeze Records. His music has been recorded by several artists, most recently by the noted saxophonist Bob Sheppard, who recorded two of Jeff’s compositions on his latest CD “Close Your Eyes”, released on BFM Records. Jeff’s work as arranger/pianist can be heard on the Summit Records CD “Lost In The Stars” by vocalist Deborah Shulman and trombonist Larry Zalkind, released in April 2012. Jeff toured with the late, legendary Lou Rawls as his pianist and conductor for nearly sixteen years until his untimely passing in 2006. He appeared with Rawls at jazz festivals, clubs, and with orchestras throughout the U.S. and abroad. In addition to his work with Lou Rawls, the list of artists that Jeff has performed and recorded with over the years is extensive. Jeff toured worldwide for seven years with the Jazz Tap Ensemble, and also served as Musical Director for another of our legendary singers, Jack Jones. He has worked with Diane Schurr, Gregory Hines, Savion Glover, Morgana King, Dolly Parton, Shiela Jordan, Kenny Washington, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Peter Gallagher, the Bill Holman Big Band, Stacey Rowles, Larry Koonse, Bobby Shew, Bob Sheppard, Judy Wexler, Denise Donatelli, Julie Kelly, Catte Adams, the Mike Barrone Big Band, Janice Mann, Anita O’Day, John Vance, Lorenzo Lamas, Frank Potenza, Greg Poree, John Pagano, Paulette McWilliams and Miki Howard to name just a few. In addition to his professional schedule,In addition to his professional schedule, Jeff is currently on the faculty at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood.
